Threads Fall Apart

We are spinning webs, but we spin to divide, to bind, not to discover the underlying unity and freedom in all things. We do so in our social structures, our religions, our politics, our books and education. How is this helping us? We do not know the difference, only the division, and the gap is laid ever wider. Even though the ultimate can never be tampered, tainted or grasped by thought and time, man's domain of rationality can still be used as a signpost on the road to enlightenment (Which of course, is right beneath your feet, and was there before you were born, the road was laid and the universe emerged. It's all here, all now, timelessly.)

We get so caught up in roads, mind you, they are everywhere. One need only look at our educational systems, our libraries and bookstore, our television and other media to see this. In fact, to play with literal metaphors, have you ever gazed down on a map of urban environment? Webs, webs, weaved through grass, forest, mountain, snow - anything. Roads everywhere. Paths everywhere. Man has succumbed to the disease of the known, which is indeed his very own self.

But this isn't a rant. Just a point. And at this moment what can we do to end it all? To map out another road out isn't doing anything. That's just going in a circle.

To get onto land, a sailboat doesn't make another river. It moves with the wind and reaches land. The water is merely a conduit, simply being. We have given the roads and their destinations meaning.

So is there anything we can do, right now? Yes! Instantaneous. In fact, you already are doing it. That elusive path to enlightenment is in fact already achieved - not in the sense of material gain, but of just being. Right here, ever present. You can see this right now too. You are being. One exercise that is, for lack of better terms "trippy", is an experiment in awareness. Yep, that's right. No one can give you truth and developed awareness of being. You're going to have to test the water yourself.

Notice your awareness. Just notice it. Don't focus it, relax it, intensify it. Just be aware of it. Be aware of all objects within this awareness - all objects being, indeed, everything. You may notice the chair, bed, floor you are resting on. All the material objects in the room, the weather outside, night or day. Everything, presently, without any movement on your part, is effortlessly arising in your awareness. These objects come and go. Manifest and disappear. But ever still, ever present is this simple being, this awareness. When you cry, when you laugh, when you are immersed in thought and dreams, or staring absent-mindedly at the wall, there is still this observer!

Here comes the trippy part. You, this observer, who is aware of all and everything. You witness the world, your thouhts, your emotions. May I ask, who is doing the looking? What is observing? The observer does not have a face. You cannot pin point it. You simply are aware. Intangible, yet all tangible nature manifests through this "eye of spirit." Weird, right? Bizarre, almost? Who is observing, this faceless face? I'll leave you with that. It's a neat trick I learned from someone who definitely has a knack for words.

Float on, all ye objects, for I am the eye that cannot see itself. Who am I?
